8-BALL
FEATURE | 106 MIN | ROMANTIC COMEDY-DRAMA / ENSEMBLE / DRAMEDY
They went out for cocaine. Arizona had other plans.
LOGLINE
With one weekend left before Vince Malone reports to county jail, he convinces lifelong friends Jerry Santoro and Annalise “Leese” Ruiz to make a twenty-minute run across Phoenix for more cocaine. The errand explodes into a three-day odyssey through robberies, UFO believers, roller rinks, desert hustlers and one increasingly battered red Trans Am. Somewhere between Phoenix and Bisbee, the trio realizes Vince knew where to find cocaine all along—he just couldn't let the weekend end. Now three friends who've spent their lives confusing movement with freedom have to decide what happens when somebody finally stops the car.
THE STORY
Arizona, 1988. Vince, Jerry and Leese are a tiny country of three—platonic, sexually charged, fiercely loyal and fluent in years of bad decisions. Their last weekend together spirals from a Mesa pool-hall robbery to an alien buffet, Tucson's Blue Lizard, neon roller rink Orbit 88 and a Tombstone shootout that destroys the Magic 8-Ball glued to their dashboard. Along the way, Vince sees older versions of himself still chasing one more night, Jerry confronts the life he's been avoiding, and death-obsessed Leese realizes she actually wants to live. The party is still funny; for the first time, they can also see how it ends.
Then Jerry discovers the cocaine they've spent three days searching for has been beneath the passenger seat the entire time. He dumps it, the Trans Am promptly rolls into a dry wash, and Monday finally catches them. At sunrise, Vince voluntarily walks through the county-jail door, Jerry calls his daughter, and Leese takes one last impossible Polaroid. Five years later, they're still three—older, changed and together—when a payphone rings and Leese gives the universe one final answer: “Ask again later.”
ASK AGAIN LATER.
Eventually you have to stop asking the universe what happens next.
