Places with rules, texture and consequence.
CONFLICT
Pressure reveals who people actually are.
HUMOR
Even serious stories need oxygen
MOMENTUM
Stories should move.
ORIGINALITY
Start somewhere familiar. Take it somewhere unexpected.
Fred Dex grew up in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, where his mother ran an arcade and VHS store. Long before streaming libraries and recommendation engines, he was surrounded by movie boxes, genres, characters and stories — cataloging tapes, watching everything he could get his hands on, and developing the kind of movie memory that never really leaves you.
Instead of film school, Fred went into hospitality. Restaurants, bars, wine, travel, openings, late nights, impossible guests, brilliant cooks, difficult personalities and thirty years of people under pressure became another kind of education.
Eventually, the stories started winning.
Fred now writes across horror, thrillers, science fiction, comedy, family, animation, action and limited series. The genres change. The approach doesn’t: build the characters, build the world, find the pressure point, and let the story move.
He lives and writes in New York City.
