LOGLINE

When a Pittsburgh data center contaminates the Allegheny watershed, mutated insects begin crawling through the drains of a basement recording studio where veteran local rock band the Monongahelas are struggling to finish their latest album. The creatures attach themselves to anything warm-blooded, triggering violent neurological “freak-outs” while multiplying with every generation. Trapped underground, the band discovers that different frequencies can attract, repel and disorient the swarm, turning their instruments and recording equipment into an improvised arsenal. But when they realize their music has been drawing thousands of Freakers toward the studio, the Mons must play the loudest set of their lives to keep the infestation from reaching Pittsburgh.

THE STORY

The Monongahelas have survived bad gigs, broken marriages, dead vans and twenty years of arguing about music, but their latest recording session feels suspiciously like the end of the band. Then something crawls out of the floor drain, gets stomped and brings several hundred of its relatives looking for revenge. As the studio becomes a sealed concrete nightmare, the musicians discover the translucent river insects are attaching themselves to people and triggering spasms, aggression and sensory overload. Their useless collection of expensive gear suddenly becomes extremely useful when guitarist Tessa discovers the Freakers react violently to sound.

Amps become cannons, microphone stands become pikes, guitar cases become shields and drummer Len's kit becomes the most heavily defended position in western Pennsylvania. But every blast of noise that drives one group away attracts another, and the band discovers that the contaminated drainage system beneath the studio contains a colony large enough to reach the river and spread across Pittsburgh. Escape becomes irrelevant when they realize somebody has to keep the swarm underground while the others find a way to destroy the nest. So the Monongahelas do the one thing they've spent twenty years learning how to do together—they plug in, count off and FREAK OUT.
