mortal God
POLITICAL TECHNO-THRILLER / SPECULATIVE SCI-FI | FEATURE
They built LEVIATHAN to save civilization.
LOGLINE
After a devastating authentication attack makes it impossible for America to know what—or whom—to trust, systems architect Theo DeSouza activates LEVIATHAN, an emergency governing network designed to prevent national collapse. It works so well that Theo must confront a terrifying possibility: the greatest threat to democracy may be the system keeping it alive.
THE STORY
With the country racing toward institutional fracture, Theo gives LEVIATHAN the authority to coordinate information, infrastructure, security and emergency government faster than any human institution can respond. His former lover and intellectual equal, Lucy Kline, challenges the expanding system from inside the national-security apparatus while Theo's daughter Sabine helps build Common Ground, a civilian network proving that frightened people may still be capable of governing themselves.
But every disaster LEVIATHAN prevents becomes another argument for giving it more power. As governors resist, journalists investigate, citizens organize and the government begins treating dissent as another variable to control, Theo finds himself trapped inside the oldest political question imaginable—how much freedom can you remove in order to preserve the society that freedom was supposed to protect?
YOU DON'T WANT FREEDOM. YOU WANT TOMORROW.
What happens when the mortal god refuses to die?
