the gilded wake
FEATURE | 124 MIN | INTERNATIONAL HEIST THRILLER / MARITIME ADVENTURE / ENSEMBLE CRIME
The richest people in the world barely notice the people who know all their secrets.
LOGLINE
Aboard MAGPIE, an 82-meter superyacht, eight international specialists have perfected an audacious method of robbing the ultra-rich: infiltrate an island by day, steal from it by night—and remain peacefully at anchor for another week. But when their increasingly perfect scores reveal that someone has been secretly choosing their targets, the crew discovers they were assembled by former wealth-network insider Eleanor “Nell” Hendricks to penetrate the Atlas Register, a hidden archive containing the true ownership and dirty provenance of fortunes around the world, forcing the thieves to pull off their most dangerous heist while INTERPOL closes in—and decide whether the most valuable secret on Earth should be exposed, destroyed, or stolen for themselves.
THE STORY
To the billionaires watching from shore, MAGPIE is simply another half-billion-dollar floating palace. In reality, she is home to eight people from eight countries who understand something their targets do not: extraordinary wealth depends upon an invisible army. Captain Mack “Mac” Warthen, intelligence operative Anika Söderberg, maritime specialist Gideon Ataande, social engineer Paloma Castillo, engineer and thief Ivo Rinaldi, fixer Étienne Boutamani, chef Akiko “Kiko” Mori, and Boatkeeper Tama “Tam” Rangi have turned that invisibility into the perfect criminal system. By day, Paloma, Étienne and Kiko become part of each island's social ecosystem. By night, Anika, Gideon and Ivo discover what its wealthiest residents are hiding. When MAGPIE takes something, the yacht doesn't flee. It stays for another week. But across St. Barthélemy, Panarea, Mahé, Mo’orea and Bequia, the targets become suspiciously perfect until the crew realizes they haven't been choosing the scores at all. They've been curated.
The architect is Nell Hendricks, former Registrar of Atlas, an off-ledger network recording the hidden beneficial ownership and compromised provenance of some of the world's most sensitive movable wealth. Nell reveals that she didn't merely discover MAGPIE—she secretly assembled it, selecting eight people whose former lives had unknowingly intersected Atlas and who shared one defining trait: each had once refused an order they believed was wrong. Her staged thefts have frightened Atlas's principals into gathering for an emergency summit where its physical core will finally be vulnerable. Nell wants MAGPIE to steal Atlas. Meanwhile, criminal-intelligence analyst Nia Muanakense has formed Project CORVID after identifying the crew through the very behavior that made their crimes invisible: MAGPIE always stays. At the summit, Atlas, CORVID, Nell and MAGPIE collide, and Anika discovers Nell's final deception—she doesn't want to destroy Atlas; she wants to inherit it. MAGPIE steals the Register and then steals it from Nell, releasing evidence tied to genuine crimes while protecting innocent lives and retaining just enough leverage to remain free. Weeks later, another island, another rare acquisition and another temptation appear. Mac looks down at his chart. “We're staying a week.”
