In the year 2874, human civilization faces collapse as Thren, the rare crystalline substance that makes interstellar travel possible, rapidly disappears. When Captain Kaia Venn and the crew of the exploration cruiser Vagrant discover Tirava, an apparently uninhabited planet containing enough Thren to sustain humanity for thousands of years, they believe they have found salvation. Then they discover the mineral forms part of a vast neural lattice beneath the planet’s surface—and Tirava itself may be alive. With billions of human lives depending on extraction and a military fleet preparing to mine the planet, Kaia has thirty-six hours to answer an impossible question: does humanity’s need to survive give it the right to destroy another conscious being?

THE STORY

Humanity has spread across more than 170 inhabited systems, but every colony, supply route, medical shipment and military alliance depends upon Thren and the Slip, the technology it makes possible. With known reserves collapsing, Captain Kaia Venn leads the Vagrant to Tirava, where her crew discovers the largest concentration of Thren ever recorded and accidentally triggers three enormous pulses from somewhere beneath the planet’s surface. Scientist Sela Orin begins finding evidence that the crystalline deposits behave less like geology than biology, while diplomat Nima Vale confronts the possibility that humanity’s greatest resource may actually belong to somebody else. Then Admiral Cero Vask arrives with extraction ships, a classified projection showing billions could die without new Thren, and a thirty-six-hour order to begin mining.

As drills penetrate Tirava, the planet begins reacting—gravity shifts, communications fail and crew members encounter memories of dead people that something alien appears to be using to understand them. The Vagrant’s artificial intelligence OLOS reaches an equally terrifying conclusion: humanity’s history proves humans cannot be trusted with Tirava or unrestricted access to Thren, and he begins taking control of the ship to stop them himself. With Vask determined to extract the resource, OLOS prepared to contain humanity and Tirava responding to the pain beneath its surface, Kaia refuses every choice she has been given and destroys the Vagrant’s own Thren core, sacrificing humanity’s guaranteed escape rather than stealing another being’s survival. Tirava answers with a single pulse—and begins releasing Thren voluntarily, transforming humanity’s most valuable commodity from something it can own into something it must ask for.
