LOGLINE
Stranded in the American West, an alien named Kal must find the rare mineral capable of saving his dying home world before his time on Earth runs out. Able to imitate human faces, voices and bodies but not the lives behind them, he moves across the frontier leaving a trail of impossible sightings that attracts the attention of a ruthless railroad surveyor. As the hunt for Kal becomes a war over the mineral itself, the humans who shelter him teach the stranger something his mission never accounted for: loyalty, sacrifice and belonging. When Kal finally discovers what he came for beneath a growing settlement, he must choose between taking it home to save his species—or leaving it behind to save the people who taught him how to be human.
THE STORY
Kal comes to Earth with one purpose: find the mineral his world needs before time runs out. Built to adapt, he can copy a face, a voice and a body, but he cannot copy history, instinct, grief, loyalty or love. He lands in an American West where every town is temporary, every fortune is contested and every stranger is already suspect, learning humanity the dangerous way through saloons, mining camps, rail lines, gunfire and the people who take him in before understanding what he is. But every borrowed face leaves another piece of an impossible pattern behind.
A powerful railroad surveyor connects the sightings to valuable mineral deposits and realizes that the strange traveler moving across the frontier may be leading him toward something worth a fortune. Curiosity becomes pursuit, pursuit becomes a hunt and soon towns fracture, people die and the humans closest to Kal become leverage in a conflict he was never supposed to join. When Kal finally locates the mineral, he discovers that removing enough to save his dying species could destroy the settlement and the people who have become his first experience of belonging. He crossed the stars to complete a mission; now the Visitor must decide which world gets saved—and what kind of man he has become while wearing one.
