REd shoes

ROAD COMEDY-DRAMA | WINE ADVENTURE | FEATURE | 95 MIN

LOGLINE

Burned-out American wine journalist Jack Stanton lands in New Zealand for a disposable Central Otago Pinot Noir assignment, but after his red shoes trigger a brutal Christchurch pub beating, he is rescued by a reformed Māori motorcycle crew and dragged across the South Island on the ride of his life — forcing him to choose between exploiting the story that could save his career and earning the family that saved him.

THE STORY

Jack Stanton knows wine, restaurants and how to leave before anything gets personal.

He is broke, career-worn and carrying an unheard voicemail from his dead father.

Then he wears the wrong shoes.

At a Christchurch pub, Jack’s red sneakers collide with an old gang code. A bottle comes down. Jack ends up bleeding in the rain.

Then the motorcycles arrive.

Rangi “The Wolf” Tūwhare leads the Mystics, a reformed crew that has redirected old violence into community, protection and youth work. Beside him are Maia “The Shadow” Kaihau, the moral blade; Takuta “Gentle Giant” Te Aroha, protector and food philosopher; and Hawera “The Viper” Paki, comic chaos with survival instincts.

Their rule:

Guest first. Writer later.

Jack chooses the sidecar over the rental car.

The road opens.

Sheep. Mud. Meat pies. Breweries. Lakes. Marae. Queenstown. Karaoke. A hungover skydive. Central Otago vineyards.

Rangi teaches restraint.

Maia teaches respect.

The gang teaches Jack that danger and violence are not the same thing.

Jack teaches them wine.

How to taste.

How to blend.

How to serve.

How to stop apologizing for being in the room.

Tommy Harrow strips away Jack’s wine theater.
Fiona teaches that the land comes first.
Oliver MacKenzie becomes the gatekeeper test.

Then six winemakers build the bottle together.

It gets a name:

RED SHOES RESERVE.

For once, Jack is helping create something instead of just writing about it.

Then he betrays them.

His editor wants danger, blood and the “biker redemption” angle.

Jack sends the notes.

Maia finds them.

Rangi reads them.

No one hits him.

They put him in the van.

That hurts more.

At a roadside motel, Jack finally listens to his father’s voicemail.

His father was proud of him.

Jack stays.

He does not ask for forgiveness.

He asks for work.

THE TURN

In Central Otago, the Mystics and the wine community create Red Shoes Block, a youth training vineyard.

At the rally, Kahu uses Jack’s leaked words to provoke Rangi back into the man he used to be.

Rangi refuses.

Jack steps forward instead.

He admits the betrayal was his.

Hunger without respect is theft.

He kills the exploitative article.

Then everybody goes to work.

Posts.

Vines.

Dirty boots.

Kids learning to prune.

Community first.

Writer second.

Back in New York, Jack writes the story he earned.

A crate arrives from New Zealand.

Red Shoes Reserve.

Photos from the vineyard.

A note:

ROOTS FIRST. GLORY LATER.

Jack pours the wine.

The red shoes sit by the door.

Somewhere across the world, motorcycles start again.

WINE IS THE BRIDGE.

THE ROAD IS THE TEST.
