the fifth line
HISTORICAL MUSICAL DRAMA / ENSEMBLE ADVENTURE | LIMITED SERIES | 6 × 50 MIN
The war ended. The music didn’t.
LOGLINE
In 1869 New Orleans, Black and white Civil War veterans secretly begin playing together and accidentally create a radical new method of making music—one built on improvisation, call-and-response and freedom from the written page. As their sound escapes the room, they discover that a country willing to hear their music may not be willing to accept the men who made it.
THE SERIES
Four years after the Civil War, Gus Baptiste, a free-born Black Creole cornetist and Union veteran, collides with Silas Moyer, a Pennsylvania German veteran who believes music survives because somebody writes it down. A storm traps their rival bands inside a Tremé printing shop, where military cadences, spirituals, reels, fiddle, banjo and brass collide into something none of them can name.
They create The Fifth Line Society and hide their experiment beneath the shop in The Underroom, where five knocks gain entry and every musician must bring one song from home. As their new sound begins leaking into New Orleans, friendship collides with racism, money, ownership and an increasingly dangerous question: who gets to claim music created together?
